Chapter 11

5th AUGUST

5 August

The date flashes up on her screen as her computer starts up and bile rises in her throat.

For a moment, she’s huddled against the harbour wall, a ten-year-old wisp of a child watching the lifeboat launch as the storm rolls in off the Atlantic Ocean. Her sister, Jeanie, had made her swear on her life not to tell anyone she was taking out the skiff. She’d been helping Father at the police station and she said needed to ‘clear the voices out of her head’. And if you have a sister who is nearly eighteen and always knows what you’re thinking, you tell no one, ever. So, it must have been her fault when Jeanie’s body washed up on the beach the next day.

Then it’s August the fifth one year later. There are police outside the house when she returns home from school. Without Jeanie’s help, her father’s police conviction rate had plummeted, and so had his self-esteem. He’d hoped that she could step into Jeanie’s shoes and help him, but she didn’t have telepathy like Jeanie.

“If you hadn’t been so useless,” screamed her mother, “your father would still be alive.”

She gives herself a mental shake. How fitting that this August the fifth will be the day she will perfect her procedures. Today will make up for all the others. No-one will ever call her useless after this.
